Are You at Risk of Osteoporosis?

Take this quiz and find out now - check all that apply to you:

  • White or Asian ethnicity
  • (to find out, wrap your right hand around your left wrist just above the "wrist bone"; if your middle finger and thumb overlap, you have a small frame)
  • Family history of bone loss with age
  • High protein diet
  • Low stomach acid or frequent indigestion
  • Lack of weight-bearing exercise
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Drink more than 1 glass of alcohol per day
  • Less than optimal intakes of calcium, magnesium, and other nutrients needed for new bone formation
  • Long-term use of anticonvulsants or blood-thinning medications
  • Regular use of aluminum containing antacids
  • Regular use of diuretics such as Lasix, Bumex, Edecrin and Demadex
  • Hyperparathyroidism, Type 1 Diabetes, thyrotoxicosis or Cushing's syndrome
  • Long-term use of prednisone or cortisone therapy

If you checked three or more of the above statements, you are at risk for osteoporosis and need to begin osteoporosis prevention. Only your medical doctor can make a diagnosis, but you don't have to wait until you have osteoporosis to do something about it!
