InflammationMost of us think of inflammation as something that happens when we bump our knee on the table, get in a car accident or have aches and pains of various kinds. We all know the classic signs – pain, redness, swelling and heat – but most people don’t realize that inflammation is triggered and propagated by the immune system. This is an incredibly important point, as it gives us the clues we need to deal with inflammation effectively.

Inflammation is a Protective Response

Inflammation is one of the first responses of the immune system to infection or irritation. Inflammation is stimulated by chemical factors released by injured cells and serves to establish a physical barrier against the spread of infection, and to promote healing of any damaged tissue following the clearance of pathogens. All the symptoms of inflammation (pain, swelling, redness and heat) are caused by chemical factors induced by the immune system

It is important to reiterate that inflammation is a protective response initiated to remove injurious stimuli and initiate the healing process. Without inflammation, wounds and infections would never heal. However, chronic inflammation can lead to a host of diseases, such as hay fever, atherosclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis. It is for that reason that inflammation and immune function must be kept in balance.
