ApplesEverybody knows the adage “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Now research is showing why. Apples are high in pectin (which is a soluble fiber) which has been shown to help lower cholesterol and reduce cancer of the colon. It also helps keep the bowels regular and reduces the incidence of diverticulosis while promoting healthy bacteria in the gut.

Along with its high pectin content, apples also contain a healthy dose of quercetin, insoluble fiber, vitamin C, beta-carotene, potassium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. This may be another reason why apples have held such high regard throughout the ages as a general tonic and healthy food. Apples have been shown to help:

  • Lower cholesterol
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Stabilize blood sugar
  • Aid in detoxification, especially of heavy metals
  • Inflammation of the colon
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Arthritis
  • Protect against radiation
  • Improve immune function

Research also suggests that consume one apple a day helps lower the risk of heart attack by as much as 32%.

Buying apples

Buy apples that are firm and well colored. Immature apples lack color and may look shriveled after being stored. Avoid fruit that yields to slight pressure on the skin and which has a soft, mealy flesh or has bruised areas.
